While we may be in a drought, the West is experiencing one of the worst droughts ever
(WHSV) - Some of our area has stayed under moderate drought conditions as we are coming off the driest spring in 15 years.
Locally, we have a minor to moderate drought but the western US is experiencing a widespread exceptional drought.
The drought in California has brought a devastating impact on bees and crops. This means the entire country will likely see food prices spike due to terrible growing conditions. One farmer grows organic produce for Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Costco and others.
“It’s a problem of anybody that eats fruits and nuts and vegetables because California grows about half of all the fruits, nuts, and vegetables in the United States,” said Joe Del Bosque of Del Bosque Farms.
This year, the losses caused by drought could be in the millions of dollars as farmers are worried they may not be able to survive if relief does not come soon.
This week has brought some relief to our area. Rainfall totals have ranged anywhere from about three quarters of an inch to more than three inches from Thursday evening to Friday evening.
This will bring some relief to the ongoing drought, but next week will be a rather dry week. The drought monitor will be updated next Thursday and is available on the weather section of our website.
